As one who is part of a small handful of practitioners who have been around since before food safety certification was a “thing” let alone an industry, it is time to take a look back at where we have been, forward to where we are going, and importantly look at where we may have become distracted along the way.
This presentation looks back at the history of food safety certification from the development of “HACCP certification,” the SQF Code and the GFSI benchmarked standards to food fraud and food safety culture, and attempts to measure the success rates of the various food safety initiatives. It maps the timeline and addresses the innovations and challenges as we move forward. It considers what we have achieved and what we have missed, what we have focussed on, and what we have overlooked.
Why? To move forward it is necessary to know where we have been, to take stock of where we are now, and to recalibrate, if we agree recalibration is necessary, to achieve improved food safety outcomes in future years.
