In the early days of ISO 14001’s development, the idea of modeling it on the ISO 9001 standard was not a given. A concept called TQEM (total quality environmental management) which was first offered by a U.S. organization, GEMI (the Global Environmental Management Initiative), and recognized the value of addressing environmental management with Deming’s TQM philosophy which underlies ISO 9001. For organizations which, today, have adopted so-called integrated management systems, applying efficiency regimes such as lean (thought of as a quality program) to reducing environmental waste can provide tremendous benefits.
