ASTM International’s cannabis committee, D37, is working on a standard that will provide recommendations for cannabis laboratories.
The proposed WK63913 standard will outline best laboratories practices, recommended certifications, types of analyses, and quality-assurance functions.
Laboratories analyzing products from the cannabis industry will find the standard useful as it aims to represent best practices across the industry with strategies that are consistent with various regulatory agencies and governing bodies.
Consultant for Orion GMP, Cary Black, said the standard will address issues that may be unique to cannabis laboratories, including personnel, security, sample handling and disposal, data management, and reporting.
“Whether it be the determination of purity, levels of pesticides or terpenes, or other analytes, consistent procedures across the industry are required,” Black said.
