Suman Kumar is the global quality and compliance manager for SAI Global Assurance Learning with Intertek SAI Global.
This interview, which we have recorded, is part of the celebration of Exemplar Global’s 35th anniversary year and is also intended to mark International Women’s Day on March 8th.
In this conversation, we chat with Kumar about the start of her career, the role models who influenced her, and the advice she offers to the next generation of auditors and conformity assessment professionals.
EXEMPLAR GLOBAL: How did you get started in your career?
SUMAN KUMAR: My career journey has been quite diverse and filled with valuable learning experiences. My journey began with my interest in biology and ecosystems with my studies in environmental science. Once I completed my bachelor’s degree in Bangalore, India, I followed my curiosity to explore the world and travelled to Australia.
My first job was in telemarketing, where I leveraged my communications skills to understand the Australian business landscape. This first job gave me insights across business functions and suited my natural process-driven skills.
My son would say that I had a lucky break early in my career, and I agree. I had a significant turning point when I joined SAI Global, as I knew that they were the leaders in certification businesses in Australia.
My interest in environmental systems shifted and evolved to business systems, and I was given plenty of opportunities to follow my passion for continuous learning. Working in assurance learning has provided me with opportunities for professional development and continuous learning, allowing me to expand my knowledge in areas such as assurance and compliance.
Overall, my journey highlights the importance of resilience, adaptability, and seizing opportunities for growth, even in unfamiliar territory. My commitment to learning and personal development has undoubtedly contributed to my success at SAI Global.
EG: Were there female mentors who helped you along the way?
SK: I’ve found inspiration from women across various fields and walks of life, despite not having a formal mentor myself. Womens’ achievements and leadership in diverse domains, including business, sports, healthcare, engineering, and entertainment, serve as powerful examples of resilience, determination, and success.
Indeed, women in leadership roles, whether as CEOs guiding organizations to achieve their goals or in other influential positions, play a vital role in shaping our communities and inspiring others. Their ability to navigate the complexities of work-life balance while making significant contributions to their respective fields is truly remarkable.
Leadership is not just about attaining personal success but also about having a positive effect on others and inspiring them to reach their full potential. By highlighting the achievements and leadership qualities of women, we contribute to a culture of inclusivity, empowerment, and diversity, paving the way for future generations to thrive.
Although having a mentor can be immensely beneficial, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of role models, regardless of gender, allows for a broader perspective and enriches one’s understanding of leadership and success. My admiration for women who excel in their fields reflects a deep appreciation for their contributions and serves as a testament to my own commitment to personal growth and empowerment.
EG: Have you seen changes in the industry regarding the number of women who are pursuing careers as compliance managers and auditors?
SK: I have seen a significant trend in women pursuing careers in compliance management, auditing, and business assessment. I am glad to see the growing recognition of the importance of gender and equality in the workplace. I can see that this leads to greater opportunities and support for women in traditionally male-dominated fields such as compliance and auditing.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.” This underscores the global movement towards empowering women and advancing gender equality. Many countries and organizations have recognized the benefits of investing in women’s education, training, and professional development to accelerate progress towards gender parity.
As a result, we are witnessing a shift in attitudes and practices, with more women taking proactive steps to enhance their skills and pursue career advancement opportunities in compliance management, auditing, and conformity assessment. This increase in the number of women undertaking training and professional development reflects a growing commitment to promoting gender diversity and inclusivity in these specialized fields.
By investing in women’s education, training, and career development, organizations can tap into a diverse talent pool, foster innovation, and drive business success. Moreover, empowering women in compliance and auditing roles not only contributes to gender equality but also enhances overall organizational effectiveness and resilience.
Although progress towards gender equality may vary across countries and industries, the momentum towards greater female representation in compliance management and auditing roles is undoubtedly gaining traction. By continuing to invest in and support women in these fields, we can accelerate progress towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
EG: Finally, what advice would you give to other aspiring female auditors or compliance managers?
To aspiring female auditors, I would offer the following advice:
- Embrace resilience. Understand that the journey towards achieving your goals may be challenging, especially as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field. However, resilience is key. Learn from setbacks and rejections and use them as opportunities to refine your approach and grow stronger.
- Continuous learning. Invest in yourself by continually expanding your knowledge and skill set. Be proactive in seeking out training opportunities, attending workshops, and pursuing certifications relevant to auditing and compliance. Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to remain competitive in the field.
- Adaptability. Be open to change and willing to pivot if necessary. If your initial career path doesn’t pan out as expected, don’t be afraid to explore new opportunities and change lanes, as I did from environmental science to auditing. Adaptability is essential for navigating the dynamic landscape of the auditing profession.
- Seek mentorship. Look for mentors who can offer guidance, support, and insights based on their own experiences in the field. A mentor can provide valuable advice, help you navigate challenges, and offer encouragement during times of uncertainty. Don’t hesitate to reach out to potential mentors and build meaningful professional relationships.
- Persistence. Stay committed to your goals and never give up on your aspirations. Many great women leaders, have faced numerous setbacks but remained resilient in pursuing their vision, recognize that failure is not the end but an opportunity to learn and grow. Keep pushing forward, even in the face of adversity.
Remember, your journey may present unique challenges, but with determination, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning, you can achieve success in the field. Stay focused on your goals, believe in yourself, and never underestimate the power of resilience and perseverance.
